Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan | Archdiocese of New York

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Manhattan's Inwood neighborhood was the site of a significant celebration on May 15, as Good Shepherd School commemorated its centennial. The event featured a special Centennial Mass, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop John S. Bonnici, who represented His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

Bishop Bonnici delivered a homily that highlighted the enduring legacy of both the parish and school. He was joined by clergy members, including Paulist Fathers, Capuchin Friars, and diocesan priests, all of whom have contributed to the community over the years. Reflecting on this history, Bishop Bonnici remarked, “It is truly a bit overwhelming to be with so many brother priests who represent the history of this parish and school.”

Good Shepherd School was founded in 1925 by the Paulist Fathers to support Irish immigrant families in northern Manhattan. It has since become a cornerstone for faith formation and academic excellence. Bishop Bonnici noted that its founding was an act of pastoral care: “And it was indeed established, it was born, and because of that gift, Good Shepherd School would continue forward serving the needs of those in her midst.”

Initially staffed by the Sisters of Mercy and later by De La Salle Christian Brothers, the school expanded significantly during the mid-20th century. Despite facing economic challenges and shifts within Catholic education, it has remained resilient. As Bishop Bonnici stated: “Not only did it survive, but it continued to thrive.” He emphasized that Good Shepherd School exemplifies Christian values through its mission rooted in love for God and neighbor.

Sr. Mary Grace Walsh echoed these sentiments in her letter praising the school's contributions: “For 100 years, this institution has been a beacon of faith, education, and community.”

Over its century-long history, Good Shepherd School has welcomed diverse immigrant populations—from Irish and Italian families initially to more recent Latino generations. In 2010, potential closure loomed over the school; however, thanks to leadership efforts from then-pastor and alumni group Friends of Good Shepherd School – Inwood New York Inc., its future was secured.

Today’s vibrant student body reflects this diversity while remaining committed to Catholic teachings focused on academic excellence personal spirituality social responsibility preparing students for success service according www.gsschoolnyc.org
