In AD 451, the fourth ecumenical council of the Church took place in Chalcedon, Turkey. During this council, the Tome of Leo was read aloud in defense of Jesus Christ's full divinity and humanity. The phrase "Peter has spoken through Leo!" was proclaimed, linking the voice of Peter to his successors. Today, Pope Leo XIV is seen as continuing this tradition.

The connection between biblical Peter and modern-day pontiffs is rooted in scripture. The New Testament portrays Jesus Christ with regal themes, starting with a royal proclamation in Matthew 1:1. This depiction continues throughout various passages, emphasizing Jesus' kingly authority and his role as King of Kings.

The Bible invites believers to view Jesus as a King after David's lineage. In David's kingdom, there were many officers and rulers. One significant position was that of the one "over the household," akin to a prime minister or steward. Isaiah 22 describes this office as holding great authority, symbolized by "the key of the house of David."

This language reappears in Matthew 16:19 when Jesus gives Peter "the keys of the kingdom of heaven." This act signifies Peter's role as a leader within Jesus' kingdom on earth. After Peter's martyrdom, his office continued through an unbroken line leading to Pope Leo XIV.

The new pope's name invites reflection and prayer for his leadership. From Simon of Galilee to Robert Cardinal Prevost (Pope Leo XIV), each pope requires prayers for guidance and faithfulness. Prayers are also requested for Pope Leo XIV to be a shepherd who strengthens bishops and cares for the Church under challenging circumstances.

Finally, it is hoped that Pope Leo XIV will lead courageously like his namesake predecessors who defended faith during turbulent times.
