The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Creation Care Team is organizing events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical, "Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home." These gatherings are scheduled for June 17 at The Olmsted in Louisville and June 18 at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Motherhouse in Kentucky. Dan Misleh, founder and executive director of the Catholic Climate Covenant, will speak at both events.

Pam Raidt from the Creation Care Team highlighted the significance of these events: “This summer in the Archdiocese of Louisville, we have a special opportunity to hear directly from Dan Misleh about the work of Catholic Climate Covenant and how individuals, parishes, and local Catholic organizations can put the teachings of the U.S. Catholic bishops and Pope Francis’ ‘Laudato Si’ ’ into practice.”

Attendance is free, supported by contributions from several religious orders within the archdiocese. Misleh has an extensive background in theology and environmental advocacy, having founded the Catholic Climate Covenant with assistance from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

"Laudato Si’," published on June 18, 2015, emphasizes ecological responsibility. Father James Flynn, a retired priest involved with the Creation Care Team, described this anniversary as “a time for people to get busy reading the encyclical,” adding that it holds greater relevance today.

Flynn hopes these events attract newcomers to "Laudato Si’" beyond those already familiar with its message. He stressed that it is accessible to all audiences: “It’s more important today than when it was written,” he said.

Father Flynn regards "Laudato Si’" as one of Pope Francis' most significant legacies: “It’s an encyclical to everybody, not just Catholics,” he stated. He encouraged first-time readers to find inspiration in caring for what Pope Francis calls "our common home."

In conjunction with these events, schools and organizations are invited to display their efforts towards implementing "Laudato Si’" goals at The Olmsted's lobby. Those interested should contact Ursuline Sister Janet Marie Peterworth.
