Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
I was filled with great joy to learn that Pope Leo XIV appointed Most Reverend Mark A. Eckman as the 13th Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez expressed his happiness regarding the appointment of Bishop Mark A. Eckman by Pope Leo XIV as the new Bishop of Pittsburgh. Archbishop Pérez has worked alongside Bishop Eckman since his appointment in 2022 as auxiliary bishop and praised his pastoral care and administrative skills, stating, "The people of God in western Pennsylvania are receiving a true gift from the Holy Father in the person of their new shepherd."
In a message to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Archbishop Pérez extended congratulations and prayers to Bishop Eckman for his upcoming role, wishing him guidance from the Holy Spirit as he assumes his responsibilities. He stated, "May the Holy Spirit guide him as a successor to the Apostles."
Archbishop Pérez also took this opportunity to thank Bishop David A. Zubik for his service over 24 years at the Diocese of Pittsburgh and wished him well in retirement, saying, "May his retirement be a peaceful and healthy one."
