The Archdiocese of New York has unveiled the findings from its School Viability Study (SVS) and initiated Part One of the Elementary School Renewal Plan. This initiative aims to bolster Catholic elementary education with a focus on faith, academic excellence, and sustainability.

The SVS assessed the health and future viability of each Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese using the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS). The study revealed that while many schools are performing well, there is an urgent need for strategic renewal in others.

"All schools, whether strong or in need of additional support, will work with the Archdiocese to implement these renewal efforts," stated Sister Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools. She emphasized that although challenging, the renewal process promises transformation and growth.

Following a review of key benchmarks, several school closures were announced earlier this year. On February 13, 2025, it was confirmed that Our Lady of Refuge (Bronx), St. Lucy School (Bronx), and St. Mark the Evangelist (Manhattan) would close. A subsequent announcement on May 6 confirmed that Mt. Carmel-Holy Rosary School (Manhattan) will also close at the end of the current academic year.

"We understand the emotional impact these closures have on students, families, and communities," said Sister Mary Grace. "We trust in God’s providence to guide us to new opportunities."

In response to SVS findings, Part One of the Elementary School Renewal Plan has been launched as a mission-driven roadmap aimed at helping all Catholic elementary schools reflect and grow. Schools will engage with this plan starting summer or fall 2025.

Part One emphasizes three foundational pillars essential for long-term renewal: collaborative leadership guided by regional superintendents who encourage a renewed culture rooted in faith, learning, and accountability.

Part Two of the Renewal Plan is scheduled for release in September 2025. It will cover financial sustainability, enrollment strategies, facilities management, and strategic partnerships as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen Catholic education across the Archdiocese.

"Let us hold to the promise of Revelation 21:5," said Sr. Mary Grace. "Together we will continue nurturing faith knowledge community confident God is with us moving forward this time renewal."
