Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark announced a new pastoral initiative titled "We Are His Witnesses," set to launch on June 7-8, 2025. This initiative aims to guide members of the archdiocese in northern New Jersey towards pastoral conversion and missionary discipleship.

"Jesus tells us that He Himself is the Way, the Truth, and the Life," Cardinal Tobin stated, referencing John 14:6. He emphasized the call for individuals to repent, change their ways, and become witnesses of Jesus Christ's love and truth.

The initiative focuses on "pastoral conversion," which requires openness to God's Word and listening to one another. Cardinal Tobin highlighted the role of believers as agents of growth and change, urging them not to fear leaving their comfort zones because they are accompanied by God’s Spirit.

"As Pope Leo XIV teaches us, we exist to bring Christ’s peace to a world at war," Cardinal Tobin said. The initiative calls for bringing hope and freedom through Christ's teachings to those who have lost hope in New Jersey or elsewhere.

Cardinal Tobin also mentioned that all baptized Christians are called to be both disciples and missionaries, tasked with proclaiming the Good News worldwide while serving especially the poor and vulnerable.

Mary was cited as an example for her willingness to follow God's will without full understanding. "Our Mother Mary always wants to walk at our side," Cardinal Tobin quoted Pope Leo XIV, encouraging reliance on Mary's intercession.

Pope Leo XIV addressed similar themes in his message following his appointment as Pope after Pope Francis' death. He stressed unity under Christ despite diverse backgrounds among cardinals during his election process.

"Love and unity: these are the two dimensions of the mission entrusted to Peter by Jesus," he stated, urging followers toward reconciliation amid global discord caused by hatred and prejudice.

Pope Leo XIV also advocated for a united Church that values individual histories while promoting God's love universally. He concluded with a prayer entrusting Mary with guidance for global peace and witness testimony of Jesus' resurrection.
