Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Bishop Carl A. Kemme of the Diocese of Wichita recently dedicated the Fr. Emil J. Kapaun Family & Youth Camp, marking a significant milestone for the community. The dedication took place on May 23, coinciding with the 74th anniversary of Fr. Emil Kapaun's passing.

"This is a big undertaking," Bishop Kemme stated during the event. He acknowledged the challenges of establishing Catholic camps and expressed that it felt like a natural step for the diocese, given its history and rural nature.

Vicar General the Very Rev. David Lies recalled the early discussions about potential locations for Camp Kapaun, including Fredonia and East Wichita. "I remember several little field trips," he said, noting that former Camp Kanza in Reno County eventually became available, offering more infrastructure than other options.

Bishop Kemme emphasized the importance of supporters involved in the One Family, Fully Alive in Christ! capital campaign in making Camp Kapaun possible. He also credited Jeryl and Mark Huser from Sacred Heart Parish in Fredonia for their initial contributions to the project.

"We know Mark is smiling upon us now with great love and his intercession from his place in Heaven," Bishop Kemme remarked about Mark Huser, who passed away in 2022.

The camp's development was partly driven by Camp Totus Tuus' growth beyond its previous facilities. Bishop Kemme thanked Fr. Bernard Gorges for founding Totus Tuus and praised his vision: "You are always going to be known as 'Fr. Totus Tuus.'"

Joe and Lisa Metzen from St. Peter the Apostle Parish shared their family's positive experiences with Camp Totus Tuus, highlighting how it enriched their children's spiritual lives.

Anthony Keiser led a tour during the dedication event, showcasing existing structures and discussing future construction plans at Camp Kapaun. The campgrounds will see new cabins funded by the Fully Alive! Campaign and further developments such as a chapel and recreation building.

Organizers say that Camp Kapaun promises to shape young people's faith, strengthen families, and inspire future Church leaders as it continues to grow.
