Kyle Holtgrave, the director for Catechesis in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, spearheaded the creation of a new Catholic Scouting Venerable Father Augustine Tolton Activity Patch. This badge not only pays tribute to the first black priest in the United States but also aims to deepen a Scout’s connection with Christ through the Eucharist, as stated by Holtgrave.

The requirements for this patch, developed by the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, encompass learning about Father Tolton’s life, exploring a seminary or religious community for insight into vocational discernment, exemplifying the virtue of patience, and engaging in prayer. The badge is open to all Scouts, regardless of their diocese affiliation, who are interested in earning it, Holtgrave confirmed.

Holtgrave emphasized the significance of studying Father Tolton's life, believing it holds valuable lessons for Scouts. The upcoming National Eucharistic Congress served as an inspiration for the introduction of this new Scouting initiative. The pilgrimage route passing through the Springfield diocese, coinciding with a prayer service to honor Father Tolton's legacy, prompted Holtgrave to involve Catholic chartered units in a eucharistic procession.

The director highlighted the importance of acknowledging adversities faced by individuals, both in society and within the Church, through the Father Tolton badge. Holtgrave underscored Father Tolton's resilience in overcoming obstacles, particularly racial prejudices prevalent during his time, with the support of the Holy Spirit.

Holtgrave expressed his hope that Scouts would recognize the diverse ways in which the Holy Spirit calls individuals and the potential to surmount challenges in fulfilling that call. By drawing parallels between Father Tolton's experiences and the Scout journey, he encouraged perseverance and reliance on the Holy Spirit for guidance and blessings.

Through the Father Tolton Scouting badge, Holtgrave aims to instill valuable lessons of faith, perseverance, and communal support, mirroring the inspiring life of the venerable Father Augustine Tolton.
