In Washington, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has responded to recent Executive Orders signed by President Trump.
Archbishop Broglio expressed concerns about several issues addressed in the Executive Orders. He highlighted provisions focused on the treatment of immigrants and refugees, foreign aid, expansion of the death penalty, and environmental policies as "deeply troubling" with potential negative impacts on vulnerable populations.
On a different note, he acknowledged some positive aspects within the orders. He mentioned that certain provisions recognize "the truth about each human person as male or female."
Archbishop Broglio emphasized the Church's neutrality in political matters, stating: “I wish to reiterate that the Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party, and neither is the bishops’ conference." He stressed that regardless of political leadership changes in Washington, "the Church’s teachings remain unchanged."
He concluded by expressing hope for reconsideration of actions that might disregard human dignity: “It is our hope that the leadership of our Country will reconsider those actions which disregard not only the human dignity of a few but of us all.”
