Sister Marjorie Buttner, OP, died on November 7, 2025, at St. Dominic Villa in Hazel Green, Wisconsin. Her funeral and memorial service were held on November 18 at the same location.
Born on August 22, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts, Sister Marjorie was the daughter of Frederic and Anna (Parziale) Buttner. She joined the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1953 and took the religious name Sister Stella Maris. She earned a bachelor's degree in French from Dunbarton College in Washington, D.C., and a master's degree in education with a focus on guidance and counseling from Loyola University of Chicago.
Throughout her career, Sister Marjorie worked as a teacher and counselor at several schools including Visitation High School in Chicago; Newman High School in Wausau, Wisconsin; Anaconda Central High School in Anaconda, Montana; and Edgewood High School in Madison, Wisconsin. She also served as congregation archivist at Sinsinawa Mound for nearly two decades.
Sister Marjorie was involved with the Archivists for Congregations of Women Religious (ACWR), where she served as both vice president and president over several years. In 2017 she moved to St. Dominic Villa.
According to those who knew her: "Her prayerful and loving spirit will be missed by all."
She is survived by her sister Carole Maloof (and husband Louis), sister-in-law Patricia Buttner, nieces, and her fellow Dominican Sisters. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa either by mail or online at www.sinsinawa.org/donate.
