Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan | Archdiocese of New York

A recent statement from the New York State Catholic Conference highlights the Catholic Church’s continued support for immigrants and refugees. The statement, issued by Cardinal Timothy Dolan and other bishops across New York, references a mural dedicated in September at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral that depicts immigrants throughout history, including Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini.

Mother Cabrini is noted as a key figure who “was an indefatigable advocate, protector, and educator of newly arrived immigrants to New York.” She overcame prejudice and established charitable institutions and schools to assist newcomers.

The bishops’ statement emphasizes the long-standing contributions of immigrants to New York society. They call for compassion toward those arriving from countries affected by war, poverty, or violence. “Most of these migrants – the majority, our neighbors – are good people who arrived on our shores seeking a better life,” the statement reads.

Addressing concerns about crime among some immigrants, the bishops write: “Those immigrants or refugees who commit crimes should face the appropriate criminal and civil penalties, including deportation. At the same time, general enforcement of the immigration laws must be carried out in a humane manner that does not target the hard-working and law-abiding; that does not permit the wanton and unnecessary separation of families; and that does not rely on campaigns of fear that cripple whole communities.”

The conference opposes broad revocation of temporary protected status for migrants fleeing dangerous conditions. They urge against “the arbitrary cancellation of their legal status and threatened with a sudden return to the troubled and dangerous nations from which they fled.” The bishops also clarify that while peaceful protest is supported, violence against immigration or law enforcement agents is never acceptable.

The statement reiterates support for secure borders but calls for immigration laws that allow for an orderly process while showing forgiveness toward those who have contributed positively over time.

Citing Christian teachings, the bishops state: “To love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbor as ourselves. All other imperatives are subject to this law of charity, and it is concerned neither with legal status nor country of origin.”

New York Catholics are encouraged to sign a pledge supporting solidarity with immigrants in line with Church teaching. The letter concludes by invoking Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini as patron saint of migrants and asks for her intercession.

The statement is signed by Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan (Archbishop of New York), Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger (Apostolic Administrator of Albany), Bishop Robert J. Brennan (Brooklyn), Bishop Michael W. Fisher (Buffalo), Bishop Terry R. LaValley (Ogdensburg), and Bishop Salvatore R. Matano (Rochester).
