Men in the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln are taking part in the Exodus 90 “Ad Orientem Challenge,” guided by Bishop James Conley. The program began on November 11, the feast of St. Martin of Tours, and will continue through Christmas Day.
Bishop Conley is providing daily reflections for participants through the Exodus 90 app. The term “Ad Orientem,” meaning “toward the East,” refers to the anticipation of Christ’s coming, symbolized by the rising sun. This theme draws from Israel’s hope for the Messiah and encourages participants to prepare spiritually for Christmas.
The challenge started with the feast of St. Martin of Tours, which historically marked a period of preparation before Advent, similar to Thanksgiving Day in medieval times. Bishop Conley is leading what Exodus 90 calls its first St. Martin Challenge, focusing on gratitude, charity, and preparing for Advent. The combined period of the St. Martin Challenge and Advent provides an extended time for prayer and expectation, similar in length to Lent.
Dr. Jared Staudt, director of content for Exodus 90, said: “Bishop Conley is the perfect spiritual guide for helping us to turn to the East. He will bring his attention to how the liturgy can help us to recognize the Lord’s presence through beauty. His attention to literature and the cultural heritage of the Catholic tradition will add depth to our reflections.”
Exodus 90 emphasizes three main pillars: prayer, asceticism, and fraternity. Participants follow a structured spiritual practice that includes daily prayer, acts of self-denial, and building connections with other men in their faith community.
