Two priests from the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln, currently studying in Rome, have been sharing their observations during the papal transition following Pope Francis' death on April 21. Father Andrew Schwenka and Father Joseph Wahlmeier are documenting their experiences through videos as they witness the events surrounding the papal funeral and interregnum.

Father Schwenka is pursuing philosophy at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, while Father Wahlmeier is specializing in Biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Father Wahlmeier will soon return to Nebraska to serve as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Davey and teach at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward.

Reflecting on Pope Francis' passing, Father Schwenka remarked, “the next few weeks will certainly be historical and it’s a gift to be able to witness it firsthand in the Eternal City.” The priests joined thousands paying respects during visitations held before the funeral on April 26. Father Wahlmeier noted that St. Peter’s Basilica extended its hours due to large crowds wanting to pay homage.

More than 200,000 people attended during the three-day period when Pope Francis lay in state. “There is that contact,” said Father Wahlmeier, “with Peter, with the Vicar of Christ.” He highlighted Pope Francis’ burial near Saint Peter's resting place as a symbol of continuity.

On the day of the funeral, both priests left early from Casa Santa Maria for St. Peter’s Square amid transportation shutdowns. They participated in Mass with thousands of fellow priests and witnessed dignitaries arriving from around the world. “It was amazing to see the universal reach of the papacy,” observed Father Schwenka.

The priests also attended "Novendialies" Masses—nine days of mourning services for Pope Francis—and encouraged continued prayers for his eternal repose. As preparations for electing a new pope commenced, Father Wahlmeier reflected on seeing cardinals preparing for their conclave duties starting May 7.

Both priests emphasized prayer support for those involved in selecting a new pontiff and shared insights through videos available on their diocesan YouTube channel.
