Zach Ullrich, Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities and Transportation at Christian Brothers University (CBU), has made significant strides in his coaching career by focusing on building strong teams through dedication and sacrifice. Originally from Pennsylvania, Ullrich committed to baseball during high school and went on to pitch for Division II Mansfield University, which is now part of Commonwealth University.

“Baseball was the sport I was best at,” said Ullrich. “I enjoyed the attention to detail—the game inside the game. It’s like a chess match that no one can see.”

Ullrich's coaching career began modestly with a position as a pitching coach at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, earning $2,000 annually initially. He took on various jobs, including private lessons and vending machine operations, to support his coaching aspirations. His skills in coaching have been demonstrated by his ability to revitalize underperforming baseball programs into competitive teams.

“Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve rebuilt baseball programs that have not been doing well and molded them into championship-level teams,” Ullrich said.

His previous roles include assistant coach positions at Roanoke College in Virginia from 2016-2018, where he contributed to winning multiple championships, and Barton College in North Carolina from 2018-2020. At Barton College, he led pitchers to achieve the highest number of strikeouts in school history while significantly improving team performance.

In January 2021, Ullrich became head coach at Roanoke College before moving to Memphis in June 2024 to join CBU Athletics. There he faced the challenge of recruiting players quickly but managed successfully with assistance from Andrew Sharp.

“We went all over the country,” he said. “We recruited from California, Venezuela, Texas, Ohio, Illinois—we had five guys who got accepted the week before school started."

Addie Lees praised Ullrich's impact: “Coach Ullrich has been a great addition to our athletic department...I appreciate his willingness to go above and beyond for our students and athletes!”

In 2025, CBU achieved several milestones under Ullrich’s leadership: tying a record for conference wins and securing historic victories against Auburn University Montgomery.

“Coach Ullrich has done an outstanding job laying down the foundation for the baseball culture we need here at CBU,” said Chris Parker, CBU Athletic Director.

Reflecting on his first season at CBU, Ullrich stated: “It’s been good...It’s been fun at times and challenging at times. But none of the challenges are anything that aren’t going to make me a better coach.”

Ullrich continues working towards building a successful program from his office located in De La Salle Hall.
