Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan | Archdiocese of New York
The Office of the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York has confirmed that Mt. Carmel-Holy Rosary School in East Harlem will cease operations at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 academic year. This decision follows a comprehensive review as part of the Archdiocese's School Viability Study.
Initially identified for closure due to sustainability challenges, Mt. Carmel-Holy Rosary saw its community strive to improve enrollment numbers and affirm its viability. Sr. Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese, acknowledged these efforts in a letter to school families: “In response, school community members worked hard to boost enrollment and demonstrate the school’s viability. We are deeply grateful for those efforts.”
Despite these endeavors, projected enrollment for 2025-2026 stands at only 63 students, which falls short of sustaining operations even when considering pending applications. Sr. Mary Grace explained, “Please know that this decision was made with much prayer and discernment, rooted in our desire to nurture and strengthen Catholic education for generations.” She added that they understand how difficult this closure is given Mt. Carmel-Holy Rosary's longstanding role as "a place of faith, learning, and love for generations."
To assist affected families during this transition period, every student will be guaranteed placement at another Catholic institution. Mr. Christopher Quito, Enrollment Director, will work directly with families on enrollment matters while Mr. Anthony Biscione, Regional Superintendent for the Manhattan School Region, will handle other concerns.
Families can contact Mr. Quito via email or use the bilingual parent helpline available weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at (646) 794-2885 for assistance regarding their children's education future options.
