Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
The "One Book + One Diocese" initiative will hold its first discussion of 2025 on Thursday, April 3, at All Saints Church in Holdrege. This program is part of the Jubilee Year of Hope celebrations and involves reading four short books by Father Jacques Philippe throughout the year. Each quarter features a different book followed by a discussion event in various parts of the diocese.
Father Jacques Philippe, affiliated with the Community of the Beatitudes in France, has sold over a million copies of his works in 24 languages. The first book for this year's participants is "Time for God," which addresses principles for developing a healthy prayer life and offers advice on overcoming obstacles.
Father Jay Buhman, pastor of All Saints Parish, will provide reflections during the April 3 event. He noted that while the book offers practical tips and techniques for prayer, it emphasizes that prayer is fundamentally about forming a relationship with God. “Prayer is a relationship with God,” he said. “It’s a relationship with a God who loves us and desires that relationship with us if only we would desire a relationship with Him.”
Jeff Schinstock from the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis and Dennis Kellogg from the Office of Communications will lead this discussion session. The event will be recorded for those unable to attend.
Father Buhman highlighted how "Time for God" could be particularly beneficial during Lent as an opportunity to renew one's desire for God amidst life's distractions.
Following "Time for God," subsequent discussions include "Searching for and Maintaining Peace" led by Father Benjamin Holdren on June 13 in Seward; "Fire and Light: Learning to Receive the Gift of God" featuring reflections by Father Adam Sughroue on August 16; and "Interior Freedom" discussed by Father Ryan Kaup on November 21 in Lincoln.
Books are available through Gloria Deo Bookstore either individually or as part of a discounted bundle online or at their Lincoln location.
