Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
Lent will begin on March 5 with Ash Wednesday, marking a period of fasting and abstinence for Catholics in the Diocese of Lincoln. According to the diocese's regulations, both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are designated as days of fast and abstinence. Additionally, all Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.
The practice of fasting is defined as consuming one full meal along with two smaller meals that do not collectively equal the full meal. Snacking or eating between meals is not permitted. This obligation applies to Catholics aged 18 to 59.
Abstinence involves refraining from eating meat, as well as soups or gravies made from meat. This rule is obligatory for all Catholics over the age of 14.
Exceptions are made for individuals who are sick, engaged in hard manual labor, pregnant, or facing similar circumstances. The diocese emphasizes that these obligations should be taken seriously. In situations where there is uncertainty or questions about these practices, it is advised to consult the priest who hears one's confession.
