Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Saint Katharine Drexel's canonization with a series of events throughout the year. The celebrations will commence on March 3, 2025, with a Mass at 12:05 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.
The schedule includes several notable events such as the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Gala on April 27, a Concert and Social at the Cathedral Basilica on September 28, and an Archdiocesan Solemn Mass led by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez on October 5.
Saint Katharine Drexel was canonized on October 1, 2000. She was born into the affluent Drexel family but chose to leave her privileged life behind to establish the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1891. Her mission focused on serving African American and Native American communities, inspiring many women to join her cause as consecrated sisters.
Today, members of this religious community continue their work in education and various services including pastoral care, social services, counseling, religious education, and health care across different communities.
In May 2016, the Sisters announced plans to sell their Motherhouse property in Bensalem along with other properties in Virginia. They requested that Saint Katharine’s remains be housed within a sacred space created by the Archdiocese at the Cathedral Basilica. Her tomb now resides next to an altar donated by her family.
