As Lent approaches, many individuals find themselves contemplating how to make the most of this period. Traditionally, Lent is a time for Catholics to focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The question often arises: why do we engage in these practices? The answer lies in following the example set by Jesus during his 40 days in the desert.

Sr. Mary Kansier, M.S., shares her experiences with Lent, noting that some seasons have been spiritually beneficial. She emphasizes that true sacrifice involves clinging to God and achieving blessedness. "Every action done so as to cling to God in communion of holiness, and thus achieve blessedness, is a true sacrifice," she quotes St. Augustine.

Kansier recalls a particularly meaningful Lent when she focused on praying for others in need. She created a list of people who required special prayers and used photographs as reminders of her intentions. While not all prayers were answered as hoped, she felt her efforts were offered to God with love.

For those seeking ways to enhance their Lenten experience through prayer, suggestions include praying the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours or Rosary daily, attending daily Mass, or engaging in scripture reading each morning.

Fasting is another key component of Lent. Beyond traditional fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, other ideas include avoiding fast food or specific snacks and limiting online activities such as social media usage.

Almsgiving involves giving money or goods to help others. Opportunities for this practice include supporting organizations like Hope of the Poor or participating in local parish initiatives.

Ultimately, whatever practices are chosen during Lent should be united with Jesus' sacrifices on the Cross. This unity transforms personal sacrifices into gifts for the Eternal Father.
