Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
The Archbishop of Philadelphia, Nelson J. Pérez, is scheduled to visit Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School in West Brandywine, Chester County. During his visit, he will lead a bilingual Mass for the school community.
The Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Saint Peter Church located at 2835 Manor Road. It will begin at 9:30 a.m. The celebration will see participation from Reverend Juan Mora of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Coatesville; Reverend Daniel Gnangba from Saint Joseph Parish in Coatesville; and Reverend Michael Olivere of Saint Peter Parish in West Brandywine.
Students from Pope John Paul II school will contribute by serving as readers and altar servers and presenting offertory gifts during the Mass. The school's student choir is also set to perform music.
This event aligns with Catholic Schools Week observed nationally from January 26 to February 1, under the theme "Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community."
Post-Mass activities include a meeting between Archbishop Pérez and recipients of the Padre Walsh Scholarship. This scholarship aims to support Hispanic families across parishes who find it challenging to afford tuition for Catholic education.
The foundation of the Padre Walsh Scholarship rests on strengthening parish communities by assisting families in accessing Catholic schooling.
Joining Archbishop Pérez during this visit are Andrew McLaughlin, Secretary for Elementary Education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and Bernadette Dougherty, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education.
Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School serves students from preschool through eighth grade and offers childcare through its Little Saints Academy. With over 600 students enrolled, PJPII emphasizes spiritual growth alongside academic achievement.
The school serves various communities including Coatesville and Downingtown among others. Its partner parishes encompass Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg and Saint Peter in West Brandywine Township.
