The Archbishop of Philadelphia, Nelson J. Pérez, has expressed his joy over the announcement by Pope Francis that Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati will be canonized as saints in 2025.

"This news initiates a great celebration for the universal Church and especially for young Catholics," stated Archbishop Pérez. He highlighted that "Blessed Carlo will be the first saint of the millennial generation and Blessed Pier Giorgio is a model of missionary discipleship for young adults who lead busy lives while seeking true fulfillment."

Blessed Carlo Acutis, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 15, is noted for his use of technology to evangelize and share his devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist. Meanwhile, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in 1925 at age 24, is recognized for his dedication to serving the poor in urban areas while balancing university studies, social activism, and daily prayer.

"These two young saints reflect the call to today's youth to live their Catholic faith with courage, compassion, and divine love," said Archbishop Pérez. He mentioned that Blessed Carlo holds a special place in the local Church's heart. Last fall, they had welcomed his mother, Antonia Salvano Acutis, who spoke about her son's love and devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist during their Eucharistic Congress.

Archbishop Pérez concluded by saying he prays that "the inspiration flowing from Blessed Carlo and Blessed Pier Giorgio nourishes the zealous hearts of our young people to serve others with Christ as their model." He urged all Catholics to rejoice at "the canonization of saints of our time and those who will inherit the Church on earth."

"Blesseds Carlo and Pier Giorgio pray for us," he added.

Reverend Nelson J. Pérez serves as the Archbishop of Philadelphia.
