Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu
Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu has issued a call to action for his congregation as the 2024 election approaches. In a recent letter, Bishop Silva highlighted several societal issues he believes require urgent reform. He drew parallels with St. Theresa of Avila, noting her efforts in reforming the Carmelite Order despite opposition.
"We have lost a respect for life in all its stages," Bishop Silva stated, emphasizing the need for change in areas such as marriage, parenting, and homelessness. He expressed concern over the current state of civil discourse and religious freedom, noting that these values have eroded over time.
Bishop Silva urged his followers to participate actively in the upcoming election, stating it is their duty "as followers of Jesus to take our civic duties seriously." He encouraged voters to prepare by "prayerfully discerning the Lord’s will" and applying this discernment when voting.
The Bishop emphasized ongoing engagement beyond just casting a vote. "Even after the election we need to continually pray for our elected leaders and stay engaged with them," he advised, stressing that democracy should be nurtured through active participation.
In closing, Bishop Silva called on St. Theresa for intercession: "Please pray, discern, and VOTE! St. Theresa, pray for us!"
