Designing a billboard for Times Square is no small feat, yet it is an opportunity that students under Professor Melinda Posey at Christian Brothers University (CBU) tackle each year. Posey's graphic art students are tasked with creating a billboard for the Nasdaq in Times Square as part of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative, unveiled on International Women's Day.

"For perspective, the project is the equivalent of a $2-million-dollar ad buy," said Posey.

The experience provides CBU students with real-world exposure and career-defining opportunities. Nick Pena, Interim Associate Dean and Visual Arts faculty member, commends Posey for her approach: "The opportunities Professor Posey brings to CBU and her classes are life-changing for many of our current students."

Posey's journey into education was unexpected. After earning a Master of Fine Arts from Memphis College of Art, she began teaching graphic design and photography at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. Her efforts led to top national rankings for the program.

Her commitment to Memphis brought her to CBU, where she continues to expand student opportunities. "I love it," Posey says about CBU. "It is a wonderful place to work."

Posey's approach involves connecting classroom projects with real-world needs. "There’s always a client right up the road," she explains. This philosophy ensures that students engage in meaningful work that enhances their portfolios.

Students have managed various projects under her guidance, including ongoing partnerships with the United Nations and local initiatives across Shelby County.

"I believe that connections and partnerships will shape our CBU Visual Arts program into an exceptional place to grow as a professional," says Posey.

Looking ahead, Posey is preparing for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of CBU's new Innovation Lab on November 12, 2024. The lab will feature advanced tools like large-format printers and vinyl cutters.

"The sky’s the limit," says Posey about future possibilities for her students at CBU.

Professor Posey's office is located in the Rosa Deal School of the Arts at Christian Brothers University.
