In a recent inquiry, a reader asked for an explanation of Jesus' teaching to "turn the other cheek," expressing skepticism about its practicality. The concept of "defending one's honor" often evokes historical imagery of knights or courtly duels. While it may seem outdated, contemporary American society remains highly sensitive to personal insults, especially in the realm of social media where image and perception are paramount.

The discussion suggests that when Jesus spoke about turning the other cheek, He was not advocating for pacifism but rather addressing how one should respond to insults. This interpretation challenges the common assumption that Christians are called to non-aggression, although early Church history shows martyrs choosing peaceful death over violent resistance.

The phrase "turning the other cheek" is linked to not returning insult with insult. The Greek verb "rapizein," translated as "strike," refers specifically to a slap meant more to insult than to cause physical harm. According to Vern Steiner of the Emmaus Institute, Jesus' teaching here is about refraining from retaliating against insults.

Jesus calls His followers to find their identity in being beloved children of God rather than seeking worldly honor. If secure in this divine identity, insults lose their power over them. Engaging in exchanges of insults only serves to debase oneself and shift focus away from God.

A pertinent adage highlighted is "hatred hardens hearts, love softens them." Responding with compassion rather than anger has a greater chance of positively affecting both parties involved and prevents one's own heart from becoming hardened. Bearing insult patiently can be seen as a form of martyrdom and serves as a powerful testament to faith and peace.
