The priests of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln will gather in Kearney from May 27-30 for a convocation. A convocation, as defined by Father Douglas Dietrich, vicar for clergy for the diocese, is a “calling together of a group of people.” He explained that Bishop Conley is "calling together" all the priests of the Diocese of Lincoln for this event.
Father Dietrich stated that the purpose of the convocation is encapsulated in its theme: “Flourishing as Priests: Body, Mind, and Soul.” The event aims to promote wellness and health—physical, spiritual, and social—among the priests. Daily talks on these topics will be complemented by time allocated for relaxation, prayer, sleep, socializing with fellow priests, and recreation.
“Workload and distance prevent many of our priests from experiencing all these things on a routine basis,” Father Dietrich noted. He emphasized that the convocation would not only discuss a well-balanced lifestyle but also provide an opportunity to experience it beyond hurried hours filled with parish meetings and lesson preparations.
Father Caleb La Rue, chancellor of the diocese, mentioned that convocations are a “very common practice throughout the United States,” though this will be the first one for the Lincoln Diocese. Each day will include concelebrated Masses with Bishop Conley and adoration chapel availability. Afternoons are reserved for rest and fraternity activities such as golfing or canoeing.
Bishop Conley expressed that structured talks aim to help diocesan priests maintain their dedication to their vocation and parishioners. These talks will be led by Father John Riccardo from the Archdiocese of Detroit. Known for his radio show “Christ is the Answer,” Father Riccardo founded Acts XXIX in 2019 to proclaim the gospel compellingly and equip clergy and lay leaders.
In a video message to Lincoln Diocese priests, Father Riccardo shared his hopes for the convocation. Having led retreats for over 3,000 priests in five years, he seeks to support those who feel isolated in their ministry. “There are a ton of brothers who are thriving right now in the priesthood," he said. "And there are a number who are not."
He stressed that although many priests love Jesus, their congregations, and the Church, they may not be thriving due to various reasons. The goal is to immerse them briefly in gospel teachings while reminding them that Jesus remains steadfast against sin and adversity.
Father Riccardo’s team plans to share what they call "three essential principles for transformation" aimed at renewing both ordained clergy and lay faithful within church leadership.
Bishop Conley anticipates positive outcomes from this gathering: “As shepherd of my priests...a good father will not only be interested in their spiritual welfare but also their joy." He acknowledged challenges such as loneliness faced by many priests due to geographical isolation after ordination.
The bishop hopes this event helps rediscover vocational joy among his clergy members while asking parishioners to pray during their time away in Kearney. Assuring that no parishes will be abandoned during this period despite changes in daily routines like regional Masses on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Father La Rue highlighted how daily Mass availability within Lincoln Diocese contrasts with broader trends across U.S., noting any temporary sacrifice serves as solidarity with Catholics globally lacking regular access to Mass.
A central emergency number (402-915-1206) has been established for sacramental needs during these days until Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m., ensuring continued pastoral care despite reduced local presence temporarily.
This biennial event receives financial support from organizations like Knights Of Columbus alongside private donors covering associated costs.
