Lyrics from the song “ by Bernadette Farrell. The recent visit to Maui brought individuals from the Maria Lanakila Parish Sacred Hearts School (SHS) ohana and Diocese of Honolulu together for intimate “talk story” sessions, reflecting on their journey through the August 8, 2023 wildfires. The sessions began with a heartfelt slideshow-video, evoking emotions as images of resilience and hope were shared.

Principal Tonata Lolesio, a pillar of strength for the community, found inspiration in the faith-based song lyrics, stating, “The song offers inspiration to her entire community dedicated to continuing their mission of providing a quality Catholic education in the face of difficult challenges.” Despite the devastation caused by the wildfires, the SHS faculty and staff demonstrated resilience by swiftly adapting to new learning environments, ensuring continuity in education.

With the support of various stakeholders, Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina is transitioning to a new temporary site in Ka’anapali, offering improved facilities for students and staff. Plans are underway to provide a conducive learning environment with modern amenities to enhance the educational experience.

In an effort to sustain their mission and provide equal opportunities to all students, Sacred Hearts School has initiated a tuition assistance fund. The community has already shown remarkable generosity, contributing towards the noble goal of raising $4 million for the coming years.

Maria Lanakila Parish’s Sacred Hearts School appeals for assistance in bridging the financial gap to support students in need. Donations to the Tuition Assistance Fund can be made through the Hawaii Catholic Community Foundation, ensuring that students thrive in a nurturing, faith-based environment.

Reflecting on their journey and expressing gratitude, the “talk story” sessions concluded with inspiring words of hope, “Mahalo.”

As Lahaina rebuilds and progresses, the Sacred Hearts Ohana remains committed to providing quality education and shaping the future of the community, guided by compassion and faith.
