Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita
Focusing on the importance of caring for the poor, Fr. Curtis Hecker, pastor of St. Peter Parish, Schulte, emphasized, “It is a Gospel truth that as we work for ourselves, we also need to look out for and maintain the poor. Caring for the poor is one of the works that we must do.” He expressed excitement about the direction of the One Family, Fully Alive in Christ! Campaign, noting the dedicated focus on supporting outreach to those in need.
The diocesan campaign, One Family, Fully Alive in Christ!, will allocate 10% of all funds raised to establish the In Love of God and Neighbor Fund. This $5 million fund will be managed as a true endowment, with annual grants being distributed to parishes and outreach ministries from the interest generated. Michael Wescott, director of Development and Planned Giving for the diocese, highlighted the significance of this fund in expanding outreach ministries, stating, “It is our hope that annual grants from this new fund will support parish food pantries, soup kitchens, Society of St. Vincent de Paul Councils, and similar ministries serving their communities.”
The fund will not only support existing outreach efforts but also provide flexibility for the diocese to invest in new opportunities as they arise. Fr. Schibi, pastor of Holy Name Parish, Coffeyville, shared his perspective, saying, “It’s all about neighbors serving neighbors.” He expressed optimism about the fund's potential to enhance their ability to support the community and meet the growing needs of the parish food pantry.
With a commitment to sharing 10% of funds raised with those most in need, the campaign reflects a stewardship way of life that calls for a higher standard of living and giving. The overarching goal is to recognize and share God's gifts in love of God and neighbor. The In Love of God and Neighbor Fund is set to play a vital role in expanding outreach ministries in parishes across the diocese, supporting essential services like mental health care, food assistance, and aid for vulnerable populations.
