Benedictine University inaugurated Dr. Joseph J. Foy as its thirteenth President on March 4, 2024, at an on-campus celebration called “Legacy and Leadership.” The day began with the Presidential Investiture Ceremony, during which the new president assumed the articles of office. The event featured remarks by Sr. Andrea Lee, Staff Chaplain of the University of Notre Dame, and Katherine Donofrio, Chair of Benedictine’s Board of Trustees.

In his Inaugural Address, Dr. Foy shared his vision for Benedictine University, stating, “I see students accessing a Benedictine education while still in high school through dual and concurrent enrollment programs, and adult learners who are finding opportunities to upskill and earn certifications and credentials in fields like Artificial Intelligence and Renewable Energy that will help them make that next step toward their passionate and productive purpose.” He also announced the establishment of a new presidential innovation fund to capitalize on emergent opportunities.

Following the Investiture Ceremony, an Installation Mass was held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, presided over by The Most Reverend Ronald A. Hicks. A reception for the Benedictine community took place in Goodwin Hall, where the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students participated.

Dr. Foy, upon his appointment, pledged to uphold Benedictine University's mission and vision of being a thought leader in Catholic higher education. He emphasized the importance of providing a transformative educational experience grounded in Benedictine values and respect for all faiths and cultures.

Before his appointment at Benedictine, Dr. Foy served in various administrative roles in higher education, both in private Catholic institutions and public universities. He also has an extensive background in teaching Political Science and has received several awards for excellence in teaching and research.

Dr. Foy's academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, a master’s degree in Comparative Politics and International Relations, and a Ph.D. in American Government and Comparative Politics.

The Inauguration of President Foy coincided with the 137th anniversary of the founding of Benedictine University, which was established in 1887 by the Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey. Benedictine University remains committed to providing a transformative educational experience while honoring its rich history and values.
