Iona University in New Rochelle, N.Y., is set to enhance its student experience with the unveiling of plans to revamp the LaPenta Student Union and upgrade its dining facilities. President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing the aim to create spaces that foster community engagement and continuous learning outside the classroom.

“We’ve seen the impact the Murphy Green has had on student life and on campus life as a whole. This is going to expand upon that vibrancy at the center of campus and continue the momentum we’ve generated,” Carey said.

The project, scheduled to start in May 2024 and be completed by Spring 2025, will see the transformation of the LaPenta Student Union into a modern, open-concept space designed to bring together the entire Gael community. The dining facilities, spanning 14,000 square feet on the first floor, will offer upgraded food options and incorporate energy-efficient features for sustainability.

Tyrone Ellen, Chartwells regional vice president, highlighted the team's dedication to providing students with a variety of food choices that promote healthy eating habits. “We have a lot of passion for what we do,” added Jeffrey Sepot, Chartwells general manager at Iona, emphasizing the commitment to serving students with care and dedication.

Shakinah Silverberg, president of the Student Government Association, expressed the anticipation among students for the new dining hall and student union experience. “They are so excited to have a larger space to enjoy the wonderful dining options offered as well as a space to cultivate friendships and relax,” Silverberg said.

The renovation project also includes a 6,000-square-foot lounge and meeting area on the ground floor, providing additional space for student clubs and leadership organizations. Kevin Herrick, managing principal at SLAM, emphasized the importance of creating engaging spaces for students to connect and interact on campus.

“As student clubs and leadership organizations continue to grow, Iona is committed to providing the open and inviting spaces that are needed to enhance the student experience,” Herrick stated.

The Wall Street Journal recently recognized Iona as the #66 Best College in America, highlighting the university's dedication to providing a positive student experience. With new enrollment on the rise and expanded opportunities for student involvement, Iona aims to cultivate a vibrant and supportive campus community.
