Bishop Michael Burbidge, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, recently issued a statement regarding the Supreme Court’s interim order on the use of chemical abortion drugs.

"The interim order by the Supreme Court is a tremendous disappointment, both for the loss of innocent preborn life from chemical abortion, and for the danger that chemical abortion poses to women," Burbidge said in the statement. "It is wrong to allow the FDA’s greatly diminished health and safety standards for mifepristone to remain in place. The FDA acted unlawfully when it first approved, and later relaxed safety requirements for prescribing and dispensing the drug. It is our hope and prayer that the Court will eventually overturn the FDA's improper actions."

The United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit recently upheld a district court ruling that reversed the FDA's decision to ease access and safety standards for mifepristone, an abortion drug, an American Catholic Tribune report said. The Circuit Court overturned a part of the lower court's ruling that sought to halt the drug's market approval during the ongoing case.

But last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court intervened by putting a temporary block on the lower court rulings that aimed to pause the relaxation of health and safety regulations for mifepristone by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The decision preserves access to the drug and reinstates certain measures by the FDA that simplify its acquisition while legal proceedings are ongoing.

This is the most significant abortion case since the high court overturned Roe v. Wade, which caused legal confusion and led to almost complete abortion bans in more than 12 states, a CBS News report said.

“Abortion is never the answer for a difficult or unintended pregnancy, as it always ends one life and risks another," Burbidge said in the statement. "Meaningful compassion for both mothers and children is needed. We will continue to advocate for policies that put women and families first, serve women in need, and pray for the day when ending the lives of preborn children will become unthinkable.”
