Lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are increasing oversight efforts concerning abortion drugs following recent actions by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). After a letter from 51 U.S. senators was sent to the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services, Bill Cassidy, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has issued an oversight letter seeking answers from Secretary Robert F. Kennedy and Commissioner Marty Makary.
The increased scrutiny comes after the FDA approved a new generic abortion drug. Lawmakers have raised concerns about the Biden administration’s decision to roll back previous requirements for in-person doctor visits, allowing mail-order access to abortion drugs. Critics argue that this policy could put women and unborn children at risk and undermine state-level pro-life laws. These developments follow assurances from Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary that the FDA would carefully review the safety of abortion drugs.
