Franciscan University of Steubenville’s women’s club flag football team played at Acrisure Stadium during halftime of the Steelers-Browns game on October 12. The team faced off against the University of Pittsburgh and was one of only four teams nationwide invited to participate, marking a significant recognition in its first season.
“It was incredible to be part of spreading Franciscan University’s mission of excellence and passion, even to the football field,” said team captain and senior Anne Seida. “There’s no university I could have more proudly worn on my jersey as I ran, surrounded by my fellow Franciscan Barons, into the Steelers’ stadium to take the field.”
The Barons, established in 2024, completed their inaugural season with a 6-1 record, including victories over the University of Pittsburgh and several Presidents’ Athletic Conference teams. The team is also recognized for fostering community and demonstrating their Catholic faith beyond athletics.
“This was a phenomenal experience for our student-athletes and a proud moment for Franciscan University and the Steubenville community,” said Daniel Andersen, Franciscan’s athletic director. “I’m grateful so many fans were able to see the faith, energy, and joy that define our players both on and off the field.”
Although flag football is not currently an NCAA-sanctioned sport, there has been recent movement toward official recognition. The Committee on Women’s Athletics has recommended that flag football be added to the NCAA’s Emerging Sports for Women list, which could lead to future championship opportunities.
