The Record is transitioning its Spanish coverage to a fully digital format, expanding its reach through an email newsletter and bilingual social media posts. The print edition, which has included the monthly Spanish-language section Vida Católica since 2018, will cease this week on June 26.
This change aims to better connect with Spanish-speaking Catholics, as explained by Marnie McAllister, editor of The Record. For the past seven years, print editions featuring Vida Católica were distributed to over a dozen parishes offering Mass in Spanish. However, according to McAllister, pastors have reported that these editions are not being widely utilized.
In contrast, a recently launched email newsletter has gained traction. "Apparently reaching more households than the print editions," McAllister noted.
Eva Gonzalez, director of Hispanic ministry for the Archdiocese of Louisville, pointed out that Spanish-speaking Catholics prefer using smartphones for communication. She highlighted that the email newsletter and bilingual content on social media platforms like The Record's website are easily accessible via mobile devices.
The monthly emailed newsletter covers local news and events within the Archdiocese of Louisville along with national and international news. It also offers links to English translations.
Spanish translations of columns written by the Archbishops of Louisville will continue to be available in print alongside their English versions.
