Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
A historical religious event unfolded at Churchill Downs, Louisville, on a serene June day in 1950. The 24th annual Corpus Christi Procession drew an estimated 31,000 attendees, including women, children, nuns, and non-marchers who gathered in anticipation of the event.
Preparations were underway with priests and men arranging two white altars amidst vibrant floral displays. The Rev. John Lyons and the Rev. William Zahner informed the crowd of the procession's imminent start through loudspeakers: “Ladies and gentlemen, in three minutes our Corpus Christi Procession will begin. We remind you that this is a time of prayer.”
The Rev. Julian Pank arrived to place the Blessed Sacrament on the main altar before a two-hour procession began. Participants observed changing patterns of color as ranks of men marched while reciting prayers broadcasted over the public address system.
The Most Rev. John A. Floersh led Benedictions with assistance from clergy members as soldiers from Fort Knox stood at attention during trumpet salutes. The ceremony reached its peak with the second Benediction accompanied by hymn singing.
As Father Pank departed with the Blessed Sacrament, attendees reflected on their shared display of faith during this significant Catholic event.
