Sacred Presence, a new 10-month spiritual direction certification course, is being offered at the San Pedro Spiritual Development Center in Winter Park. The first class will graduate in July. This program is a collaboration between the Diocese of Orlando and Mayslake Ministries in Chicago, aiming to address the demand for spiritual directors in central Florida.

Katie Phillips, program manager at San Pedro, emphasized the need for spiritual direction: “It’s been apparent that people are hungry and seeking spiritual direction.” She is actively vetting spiritual directors across the diocese and integrating new graduates into their network.

Bishop John Noonan highlighted the importance of proper training: “Spiritual direction is not what mom and dad would do. It’s a lot deeper. Not a lot of people know how to do it. It’s a process.” He aims to make more spiritual directors available to help individuals discern their faith journey.

Isabel Fernandez, director of Laity, Family, and Life at the diocese, noted the challenges involved in training: “There’s the experiential piece of understanding what you’re getting into.” Applicants must have participated in spiritual direction for at least one year before enrolling.

Father Anthony Aarons described spiritual direction as a “three-way conversation” involving the Holy Spirit. He stressed that candidates should not view themselves as helpers but rather be open to growth.

The course includes six formation modules covering various aspects such as understanding Jesus, healthy development, discernment, and mastery of spiritual direction skills. Each candidate is paired with a mentor throughout their training.

Deacon David Baker from Nativity Parish shared how the course has enhanced his own spirituality: “I want me, the directee, and the Holy Spirit to be a unit that comes together to walk with that person.”

Sherie Zebrowski from Epiphany Parish views her role as providing “spiritual companionship,” focusing on compassionate listening and non-judgmental guidance.

Denise Gillin decided to join after personal hardships led her to feel called by God: “I consider it an honor that somebody would trust me to sit in a room with them.”
