Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has addressed the recent increase in immigration enforcement actions. In his reflection, he emphasized the bishops' commitment to supporting affected communities during these challenging times.

"As your shepherds, your fear echoes in our hearts and we make your pain our own. Count on the commitment of all of us to stand with you in this challenging hour," said Archbishop Broglio. He acknowledged that while law enforcement actions are necessary for maintaining order and community security, it is crucial not to ignore the anxiety and fear present in communities.

Archbishop Broglio's statement comes ahead of a special assembly of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. He highlighted Pope Leo XIV's recent message in Chicago, which calls for sharing in the communion of life and love within the Christian faith and being a sign of hope by improving the world.

Reflecting on Pope Leo’s message, Archbishop Broglio noted that no one should ignore the cries of anxiety and fear following increased immigration enforcement actions. He expressed concern over mass arrests based solely on immigration status without due process, describing it as a profound social crisis.

The archbishop pointed out that protests across the country reflect many Americans' moral sentiments that enforcement alone cannot solve immigration challenges. While acknowledging protest as a legitimate form of democratic participation, he condemned violence and cited Pope Francis’ warning about inequality leading to conflict.

Archbishop Broglio also criticized the lack of legal opportunities for immigrants and denial of due process as harmful to human dignity and detrimental to the rule of law. He condemned unfounded accusations against Catholic service providers who support vulnerable populations.

On behalf of his fellow bishops, Archbishop Broglio assured those affected by divisive actions that they have their pastors' solidarity. "Count on the commitment of all of us to stand with you in this challenging hour," he reiterated.

He praised Catholic service organizations working towards promoting common good by aiding those afflicted and urged collaboration for just solutions to immigration issues.
