Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, has announced a new initiative aimed at addressing challenges within the Archdiocese of Newark. In a message to the Catholic community, Cardinal Tobin acknowledged the decline in parish membership, Mass attendance, and sacramental participation, alongside a decrease in the number of priests available to serve as pastors.
In response to these issues, Cardinal Tobin introduced "We Are His Witnesses," an archdiocesan initiative intended as a journey of renewal for the community. He emphasized that this is not merely another program but an opportunity for discernment regarding where God is leading them.
The initiative will focus on evaluating current practices and structures within parishes and may result in renewed ministries or changes in parish alignments. Some mergers or closures might be necessary as part of this process. Cardinal Tobin stressed the importance of support among church members throughout this transition.
To lead this effort, Bishop Michael Saporito and an Archdiocesan Planning Commission will work with pastors and parish leaders across four counties. The success of the initiative relies on active participation from the community. Cardinal Tobin expressed his desire to hear from members through ongoing surveys like the Disciples Maker Index.
Cardinal Tobin encouraged involvement by visiting WeAreHisWitnesses.org for updates and messages related to the initiative. He called upon members to join him in proclaiming "the joy of the Gospel" during these challenging times.
In closing, Cardinal Tobin reminded his audience that they are not alone but are witnesses called to share their faith with others.
