Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
The Archbishop of Philadelphia, Nelson J. Pérez, has issued a call for prayerful solidarity as the Roman Catholic Church approaches the Conclave that will elect a new Pope. Following the death of Pope Francis, the Church is concluding the novendiales, a nine-day prayer tradition for the repose of the Pope's soul. The Church of Philadelphia acknowledges the significance of Pope Francis's visit during the 2015 World Meeting of Families, stating, "May Pope Francis rest in peace through the mercy of God."
The College of Cardinals will commence the Conclave on May 7, 2025. They will seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in selecting the next Supreme Pontiff. Archbishop Pérez invites the community to engage in prayer during this period, suggesting participation in Mass celebrations, Eucharistic adoration, rosary devotions, and private prayer.
Throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, holy hours are scheduled to focus on these intentions. As the Archbishop notes, "All are welcome and encouraged to attend." Information regarding these events can be found at archphila.org/conclave.
A special petition for the Universal Prayer at Masses is being circulated in parishes, which includes praying for "confident assurance in the work of the Holy Spirit" and the "election of a new universal Shepherd and successor to Saint Peter for the needs of our times." The faithful are encouraged to join in this prayer: "Let us pray to the Lord. / Lord, hear our prayer."
Archbishop Pérez also calls upon Mary, Mother of God and the Church, to intercede, hoping for the selection of a leader who aligns with God's heart. The Archbishop concludes with a blessing for the community.
