Saint John’s Hospice (SJH), part of Catholic Charities of Philadelphia (CCoP), is set to hold a community giveaway event on Saturday, October 25, marking the completion of its fifth annual “Boot Up Philly” initiative. The event will take place at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center in Philadelphia from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Volunteers from Independence Blue Cross Blue Crew are scheduled to prepare for the event on Friday, October 24, by sorting donations and making sandwiches.
The initiative aims to assist Philadelphians who are experiencing homelessness or affected by poverty. During the Saturday event, staff and volunteers from SJH and CCoP will distribute footwear, personal care items, and socks. The Philadelphia Region of The Order of Malta will provide winter coats, while the Knights of Columbus will offer children’s cold-weather essentials.
Most Reverend John J. McIntyre, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia responsible for CCoP, and Mrs. Heather Huot, Secretary and Executive Vice President for CCoP, will attend the event and deliver brief remarks at 9:00 a.m.
Funds raised through this effort will allow SJH to purchase essential cold-weather gear such as coats, footwear, socks, and undergarments for over 1,500 individuals and families before winter arrives. This year’s fundraising goal is $150,000. Those interested in supporting these efforts can find more information here.
