Robert L. Manuel, the president of DePaul University, has expressed his sadness following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025. In his statement, Manuel reflected on Pope Francis's influence and legacy.
"On behalf of the DePaul University community, we join the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a transformative leader whose humility, compassion, and visionary spirit reshaped the Church," Manuel said. He compared the Pope with the university's patron, St. Vincent de Paul, noting their shared focus on helping those in need.
Manuel highlighted the Pope's teachings on hope, mercy, and the protection of vulnerable individuals. "Through his example of hope and mercy, Pope Francis urged us to listen deeply, welcome the stranger, and protect the most vulnerable among us," he stated. He also mentioned the Pope's emphasis on caring for both the earth and one another.
Further, Manuel spoke on Pope Francis's push for dialogue and collaboration among different groups, stating, "Through his emphasis on synodality, he encouraged us to dialogue with those who are different from us. He inspired us to build bridges — to collaborate, engage in meaningful dialogue, and seek shared purpose, even with those with whom we disagree."
Pope Francis's vision, according to Manuel, was rooted in values such as compassion and justice. "His vision for the world was rooted in compassion, justice, and the flourishing of all people," Manuel continued. He called on the community to act as stewards of the common good and to live in service to others.
In response to the Pope's passing, DePaul University plans to organize memorial services for its faculty, staff, and students. Details of these services will be made available at a later date.
