DePaul University has received a $3 million donation from Michael and Barbara Scudder to enhance its health science and athletics programs. The contribution will fund the Michael and Barbara Scudder Endowed Chair, a new full-time faculty position to lead the Department of Rehabilitative Sciences and Professions. This department includes the Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Language Pathology (SLP) programs within the College of Science and Health.

The gift will also support the construction of a new basketball practice facility, providing resources for student-athletes and coaches to improve training, recruitment, and competition. The facility is part of DePaul’s Dream Big campaign and will feature dedicated courts for both men’s and women’s basketball, as well as health and wellness amenities for all student-athletes.

Michael Scudder is the current chair of DePaul's Board of Trustees and an alumnus who earned his MBA from the university in 1993. He has served as a trustee since 2017 and retired as executive chairman of Old National Bancorp in 2024 after nearly four decades in banking. The Scudders have previously supported DePaul through various scholarships, including one for finance students at the Driehaus College of Business.

“Mike and Barb are visionary leaders, committed to creating programs of excellence that prepare students to excel. Rooted in DePaul’s Catholic, Vincentian mission, this gift strengthens our role as a university that transforms lives through education, service and leadership,” said DePaul President Robert L. Manuel. “Mike and Barb’s generosity ensures that our students — whether training to be health professionals or competing as student athletes — have the tools, mentorship and opportunities to thrive. I am deeply grateful for their support and dedication to DePaul’s future.”

The OT and SLP master’s programs are recent additions to DePaul's graduate offerings. Both are housed on the Lincoln Park Campus, where students receive clinical training and participate in fieldwork with community partners under licensed faculty supervision. OT students are trained to assist individuals with various conditions and are prepared for roles in schools, hospitals, clinics, and private practice. SLP students provide diagnostic and treatment services to children and adults through a public clinic.

The College of Science and Health recently combined these programs into the Department of Rehabilitative Sciences and Professions, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration in practice, research, and student engagement.

“At DePaul, we believe real-world experiences, community engagement and service to others are integral in preparing students to become agents of change in their future careers,” said Stephanie Dance-Barnes, Dean of the College of Science and Health. “The creation of this faculty position will enhance our programs and benefit the health and wellness of vulnerable individuals and communities alike.”

The new basketball practice facility is expected to have a positive effect on enrollment, tuition revenue, retention, ancillary revenues, and philanthropic support. In recognition of the Scudders’ contribution, the men’s basketball lounge in the new facility will bear their name.

“Our entire university will benefit from a healthy, vibrant athletics program,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy. “At the same time, the forward-thinking generosity of donors like Mike and Barb Scudder will empower our student-athletes and coaches to work together toward common goals and achieve the best possible outcomes in their sport.”

The Scudders’ donation aims to support the health and wellness of students, athletes, and community members served by DePaul’s clinics.
