The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln has relocated its Marriage Tribunal from the Bishop Bonacum Chancery to the John XXIII Diocesan Center. The move was completed on April 9. Both locations are situated on Sheridan Boulevard in southern Lincoln, next to the Cathedral of the Risen Christ and the parish school.

The relocation provides the tribunal with more spacious and handicapped-accessible facilities. The additional office space at the John XXIII Diocesan Center will enhance collaboration among the tribunal's members and offer a more confidential setting for meetings. Previously, the lower level of the center was used by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Counseling Center, making it suitable for dealing with sensitive topics.

The Marriage Tribunal, appointed by the bishop, deals with petitions for declarations of nullity, often referred to as annulments. Governed by canon law, the tribunal conducts thorough investigations into the circumstances of a marriage. The focus is on whether essential elements such as permanence, fidelity, companionship, and openness to children were present at the time of the wedding.

A declaration of nullity indicates that a marriage was never valid according to Church law due to missing elements. Father Steven Snitily, the judicial vicar, emphasized the tribunal's role in the Church’s ministry. "Although the tribunal process can be difficult and may involve painful memories, I pray that people will find the process to be healing," he stated.

Individuals seeking a declaration of nullity are advised to initially contact their local parish priest for assistance with documentation. The process is conducted confidentially, and the rights of all involved parties are protected. The former spouse is informed and can participate if they choose, but their agreement is not necessary for a declaration to be granted.

The move to the John XXIII Diocesan Center is intended to enhance the tribunal’s services and uphold the sanctity of marriage. The Diocese of Lincoln is committed to providing a fair and compassionate process for those involved.

For further details about declarations of nullity, individuals are encouraged to visit the Diocese's website or contact their local parish priest.
