During an orientation session, Dr. Deepa Kodali, an engineering professor at Christian Brothers University (CBU), articulated a vision that has become central to her life’s work: “I want to hand over a greener and safer planet to the next generation.” Although she had not previously expressed her mission in these words, her concern about environmental issues, particularly plastic consumption, is deep-rooted.

"Dr. Kodali works hard every day to ensure that her students gain the skills necessary to be successful engineers," stated Dr. Andrew Assadollahi, Dean of the Gadomski School of Engineering at CBU. He further emphasized her commitment to mentoring students both academically and personally.

Dr. Kodali's engineering journey began in India, where she pursued a bachelor's degree at the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, associated with Andhra University. She then obtained her master's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad. Her educational journey later led her to the United States, where she completed her doctoral work at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and a postdoctoral fellowship at Tuskegee University before joining CBU’s faculty in 2021.

While interviewing for her position at CBU, Dr. Kodali noted the long tenure of many faculty members, which she interpreted as a sign of the university's value of its staff. “I realized that CBU values its employees,” she recalls. Her integration into the CBU community has been positive, aided by her colleagues' kindness and the institution’s supportive environment.

“In big schools, you can have 50, 60, or 70 students in one class, and no one cares if you don’t come to school,” explained Dr. Kodali. At CBU, she emphasizes that personal connections with students are a priority. “We address students personally,” she said. The faculty take measures to help students with their academics and career prospects, providing constant support and opportunities outside the classroom.

Dr. Kodali’s teaching responsibilities cover various engineering disciplines, including Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics. She also advises on projects like the SAE Aero Design competition and works with students on creating biodegradable packaging using natural materials.

Reflecting on her integration into the university and its culture, Dr. Kodali appreciates the inclusiveness and mutual respect within CBU, echoing her previous experiences in Catholic education in India. “I am genuinely satisfied with my experience here,” she mentioned.

Dr. Kodali's professional journey and dedication to teaching align with her broader mission of environmental stewardship and student mentorship. She maintains her office in Nolan Hall at CBU.
