Ste. Anne Parish in Detroit has announced a partnership with The Catholic Initiative, a nonprofit founded by The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, to restore the Basilica of Ste. Anne and establish its long-term sustainability. This collaboration was revealed to parishioners on March 9 by Monsignor Charles Kosanke, Rector of the Basilica.

The Catholic Initiative plans a $30 million restoration of the Basilica and will set up a $20 million endowment for future needs. Part of this funding is from a $111 million commitment by The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation for "Legacy of Hope" Projects. Additional funds will be sourced from donors nationwide.

Archbishop Emeritus Allen H. Vigneron expressed gratitude for this solution to maintain historic worship spaces without compromising missionary efforts: “Due to the Basilica’s age and significance, Ste. Anne Parish would have needed to enter a state of perpetual fundraising... I am deeply grateful to the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation and The Catholic Initiative for answering the call.”

Ownership of the church property will transfer to a new nonprofit formed specifically for this purpose, while ensuring Ste. Anne Parish retains exclusive use rights through a 200-year renewable lease.

Kevin Doyle, President of The Catholic Initiative, emphasized that “Ste. Anne is more than a building; it is a community hub.” He noted that “this is the first time in United States history that the Vatican has approved a shift in ownership... We are pioneering a new model.”

Restoration work will take three years and include structural repairs as well as enhancements like an outdoor pavilion and prayer wall.

Archbishop-designate Edward J. Weisenburger voiced support: “I am both honored and inspired... It is a remarkable example of how creative and faithful stewardship can ensure preservation.”

Ste. Anne de Detroit Parish dates back to July 26, 1701, making it one of America's oldest parishes. Its current church building was consecrated in 1887 and recognized as a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2020.

The Catholic Initiative aims to provide sustainable funding models for churches through ownership transfers while maintaining operational rights for original communities.
