Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
For Spanish-speaking members of the Archdiocese of Louisville, access to Catholic news is being enhanced. The Record, in collaboration with the Office of Hispanic Ministry, has initiated a monthly Spanish-language e-newsletter and bilingual social media content.
Eva Gonzalez, director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry, emphasized the importance of improving communication within the Hispanic community. She stated that the news communicates “what is going on, what opportunities we have locally, what is happening at the national level, and even the international level.” Gonzalez further explained that “knowing what is available and what is happening will help us to make decisions, to discern in a better way, to transform the way that we live and our thinking.”
The Record has been providing Spanish translations of columns by the Archbishops of Louisville for over two decades. In January 2018, it began publishing "Vida Católica," a printed Spanish section included in each month's last print edition and available on its website.
In December, The Record launched its monthly newsletter in Spanish. This free e-newsletter focuses on local news and events within the Archdiocese as well as national and international news.
Gabrielle Krumpelman, design and digital media specialist for The Record, noted that since September 2023, a weekly e-newsletter in English has been produced to share content more broadly online.
The Record's social media pages now feature bilingual content. Its presence online — separate from that of the archdiocese — provides local, national, and international Catholic Church-related news.
Gonzalez and Krumpelman acknowledged these initiatives are influenced by both local and national growth in the Hispanic population. According to the USCCB’s Region 5 V Encuentro Report, about 18.4% of Catholics in Louisville's Archdiocese are Hispanic/Latino. Nationally in 2023, Hispanics/Latinos comprised 19.3% of the U.S. population; this figure is projected by the U.S. Census Bureau to rise to 26.9% by 2060.
Although many Spanish speakers can navigate English effectively, Gonzalez pointed out that providing information in Spanish enhances reader access and comprehension. She remarked that “communication will awaken the mind of the reader” offering opportunities for reflection and growth.
The Office of Hispanic Ministry has been producing a monthly Spanish newsletter focusing on formation and events for around four years; this will continue alongside The Record’s new initiative.
