Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Bishop Carl A. Kemme of Wichita has addressed the immigration crisis in a recent message to his diocese, following a letter from Pope Francis to U.S. bishops dated February 10. In his communication, Bishop Kemme emphasizes the importance of respecting Pope Francis and his role as the universal pastor and successor of St. Peter.

He acknowledges potential disagreements with the pope's words but insists on the need for respect and consideration: "We may have serious disagreements with the pope’s words in this matter or others, but as Catholics we owe the pope deep respect and consideration."

The bishop aligns with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in calling for urgent reform at national borders, particularly the southern border. He points out that previous border policies have allowed criminal elements such as gang members, drug dealers, and sex traffickers to enter. He advocates for a more secure border to enhance national security.

However, Bishop Kemme also stresses that there should be legal pathways for immigrants seeking refuge from poverty, violence, persecution, and other adverse conditions: "There should be a legal and more easily accessible pathway for decent and hardworking people and families." He reflects on how many ancestors faced similar challenges in their quest for better lives.

Pope Francis' stance is highlighted by Bishop Kemme as he cites: “the right of a nation to defend itself and keep communities safe from those who have committed violent or serious crimes while in the country or prior to arrival.” The pope also questions associating illegal migrant status with criminality.

Bishop Kemme calls for unity among Christians regarding human dignity: “I do not think we, as Christians, can afford to disagree on the Gospel imperative to affirm the infinite dignity of all.” He praises immigrant families from Hispanic, Vietnamese, and Filipino communities for their cultural contributions and hard work towards achieving safe and fulfilling lives.

Concluding his message, Bishop Kemme expresses continued support for immigrant families during challenging times and urges prayer for elected officials tasked with reforming immigration policies: "I will continue to pray for and support them as their bishop... I also invite us to pray that our elected officials will accept the urgent charge to reform our nation’s immigration policies."
