The Archdiocese of Newark marked the 28th World Day for Consecrated Life on February 1, continuing a tradition that began in 1997. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, presided over a special Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart to honor men and women dedicated to serving God and the Church.

In his message for this occasion, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of waiting for God as part of one's faith journey. "Each day the Lord visits us, speaks to us, reveals Himself in unexpected ways," he stated. The Pope urged believers to remain vigilant and patient, warning against falling into what he called “the sleep of the spirit.”

Cardinal Tobin echoed these sentiments during his homily: “We can have hope... because we know Him (Christ). Our daily task is to know Him... And because we see Jesus... hope certainly will not disappoint us.”

Pope Francis highlighted two main obstacles to patient waiting: neglecting one's inner life and adapting to a secular lifestyle. He noted that Christian life and apostolic mission require an experience of waiting nurtured through prayer and daily fidelity.

The event also recognized significant anniversaries among religious members within the Archdiocese's 52 congregations of sisters and 22 congregations of brothers. Sister Patricia Wormann, OP, Delegate for Religious Life, acknowledged these jubilees with gifts from Cardinal Tobin.

The Mass aimed not only at honoring current vocations but also encouraging young people to consider religious life. Following the service was a reception where jubilarians and community members continued their fellowship.

This year's celebration coincided with Candlemas Day when candles symbolizing Christ's light were blessed. Cardinal Tobin encouraged all believers to embody this light in their lives: "Let us make 2025 truly a Year of Hope."

Pope Francis concluded by urging everyone to live like Simeon and Anna from Scripture—waiting patiently while safeguarding their inner lives according to Gospel values: “If like them we live in expectation…we will embrace Jesus, who is light and hope.”
