Joann Massey, an alumna of Benedictine University, has been recognized for her significant contributions to economic development in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. She graduated with a Master of Business Administration in Financial Management in 2008, which she credits with honing her strategic thinking and leadership skills.
Currently serving as the President and CEO of the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE), Dr. Massey leads efforts to stimulate sustainable economic growth in the region. Under her guidance, EDGE has undertaken projects like the Northside Renaissance Development and the Binghampton Gateway Center, revitalizing underserved neighborhoods and offering essential services.
Dr. Massey also implemented the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design program, aimed at enhancing safety and revitalization for small businesses in high-crime areas. This initiative demonstrates the link between economic development and community improvement.
Her work has not gone unnoticed; she has been named among Memphis Business Journal’s Super Women in Business and Memphis Power 100. Additionally, she has been featured in Forbes and Black Enterprise Magazine. Her accolades include awards for Economic Development Trailblazer and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Humanitarian work from the White House.
