The Archdiocese of New York has announced several changes to its schools as part of an ongoing effort to renew Catholic education. Superintendent of Schools Sister Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., shared updates from the School Viability Study (SVS), which aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and strength of Catholic education.

The study is based on the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) and involves a prayerful discernment process to uphold the mission of Catholic schools while addressing the evolving needs of students and families.

As a result of this evaluation, certain schools will close at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. Sister Mary Grace Walsh stated, "We recognize the deep emotional impact of these closures on students, families, faculty, and parish communities who have given so much to these schools. However, even in moments of challenge, we trust that God is leading us toward a renewed future—one that strengthens our mission and better serves the needs of students and families throughout the archdiocese."

These closures are part of a broader commitment to renewal. The process will enable the Superintendent's Office to bolster existing schools, enhance educational excellence, and ensure that Catholic education continues to serve as a beacon for future generations.

Sister Mary Grace Walsh added, "As we journey through this Jubilee Year, a time of renewal and hope, we are reminded that Christ is always opening new doors. We are committed to ensuring that every child in the archdiocese has access to the strong foundation they need to flourish—both spiritually and academically."
