Ash Wednesday, observed this year on March 5, marks the beginning of Lent, a significant period in the Christian liturgical calendar. This season is described as an "annual retreat for all Christians," where believers embark on a spiritual journey reminiscent of Jesus' 40 days in the desert.

Lent focuses on three traditional pillars: prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. Christians are encouraged to engage in these practices to deepen their faith and reliance on God. Prayer during Lent might involve adopting new spiritual disciplines such as daily silence or reading scripture. Almsgiving acknowledges God's generosity by sharing resources with others, often through donations or volunteer work. Fasting aims at overcoming sin and abstaining from certain pleasures to foster spiritual growth.

Ash Wednesday itself holds symbolic importance with ashes representing repentance and humility. During services, participants receive ashes on their foreheads while hearing phrases like "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return," emphasizing dependence on God.

At California Baptist University (CBU), there will be multiple opportunities for students and staff to receive ashes in Stritch Chapel throughout Ash Wednesday. The day also calls for fasting and abstinence from meat, aligning with traditions that continue every Friday during Lent.

Additionally, CBU's Campus Ministry invites community members to contribute personal reflections based on Gospel passages throughout Lent. These reflections aim to offer diverse perspectives within the community.

Joel Kelley, Director of Campus Ministry & Mission at CBU, extends blessings for the Lenten season ahead.
